Important NHL 2022-23 rule changes which can null a Penalty

The NHL 2022-23 season has already started and with this the NHL changed a referee’s rule.

Now NHL referees can change a major penalty into a minor one or null a penalty.

Now that’s hilarious.

In the last season the NHL increased the enforcement of cross-checking penalties as you know a penalty can make a winning match into a losing one.

One user on Twitter wrote “the nhl needs to stop fooling around and make head hits a mandatory penalty – if not an auto major at least an auto minor. stop this “ohhh did he do a good enough job at tucking the elbow?? idk” subjective nonsense out of it.”

The referees will now be allowed to officially make a major penalty no longer valid after review of video. He can also change the type of penalty.

The official NHL documents stats “The Referee shall have the following options after video review of his own call: (i) confirming his original Major Penalty call; (ii) reducing his original Major Penalty call to a lesser penalty; or (iii) rescinding the original Major Penalty altogether.”
